When you visit Midtown Manhattan, NYC office for your initial dental implant consultation, one of the things we will want to do is to assess the quality and quantity of your jawbone through taking a CT scan. The dental implant post is inserted into your jawbone, and it needs a certain amount of bone to hold it securely in place.
If there is insufficient bone there is a high risk that the dental implant could fail (see dental implant problems), and it won’t be strong enough to support a replacement tooth. If your CT scan reveals bone deficiencies we will recommend a bone graft for dental implants.
A bone graft can be used to build up the height or width of bone in your jaw, and is placed during a small surgical procedure. If you only require a very small amount of bone, it might be possible to insert the graft at the same time as the dental implant. If the amount required is more significant then we will recommend placing the bone graft prior to implant surgery, and leaving the bone graft to heal and fully integrate with your natural bone for between 3-6 months.
Although this does lengthen the overall treatment time, taking a cautious approach can help give the best and most long-lasting results.

Even though a bone grafting may sound dramatic, the procedure is routine and is nothing to be concerned about. There are several different types of bone grafts that can be used.
These choices include:
Using bone taken from another site in your body greatly helps reduce the chances of rejection, but it does mean undergoing an additional procedure to remove the bone. The bone might be taken from your chin, or from another site such as your hip.
It is usually taken in the form of a block, that is then grafted onto your jaw and secured in place with tiny titanium screws.
