Botulinum toxin (like Botox®) works as a neuromuscular receptor blocker preventing the release of neurotransmitters that signal muscle activation at the site of the Botox injection. Small amounts of Botox® or Dysport® are used in wrinkled areas of the skin to relax the surrounding muscles, leaving patients with smooth skin as wrinkles disappear.
