Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a type of therapy that is used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health conditions. EMDR is a highly researched and effective practice that helps clients overcome trauma symptoms. EMDR therapy works to decrease the intensity of emotions attached to traumatic memories. EMDR works by using bilateral stimulation (BLS), such as eye movement, tapping, or listening to audio to help the brain better process information and desensitize the emotion.
There are several different types of EMDR therapy including:
Standard EMDR: Standard EMDR therapy involves identifying a stressful memory and retelling it while performing bilateral stimulation.
Accelerated EMDR: This is designed to be a more rapid version of EMDR and also utilizes BLS.
EMDR for complex trauma: This form of EMDR is designed for clients who have experienced more than one traumatic event. This type of EMDR also focuses on developing coping skills.
EMDR for grief and loss: This form of EMDR helps clients go through the grieving process and move forward from their loss.
There are several different protocols for EMDR for anxiety, depression, and other mental conditions.
