World Food Day was commemorated yesterday with various activities and above all with appeals on behalf of the nearly one billion people who go hungry, a number that is increasing due to factors such as the financial crisis.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called for greater cooperation between governments, businesses, and civil society to address the "colossal human tragedy."
Ban noted that 75 million more people have been pushed "into the abyss of hunger and poverty" due to rising fuel prices, the food crisis, the effects of climate change, and the effects of financial turmoil.
